Ground Turkey Tacos

Ground Turkey Tacos

Hello! My name is Tyler Franco I am 22 years old and I love eating delicious food, but more importantly saving money! This blog will show you all how easy it is to make great tasting meals that are inexpensive and don't take long to prepare. To start off this weekly venture is something I make quite often, ground turkey tacos.

When I first arrived at Bradley University in January 2021, I knew how to cook and bake, but I never really did it often since I had the luxury of getting meals cooked by my family. So, I had a wake up call and realized it is time to start shopping smart and preparing better. I had a good supply of your typical college foods such as ramen, mac and cheese, lunch meats, etc. from generous family members and care packages, but after a week I knew I would need more to survive and set out to the grocery store. First order of business was meats because I love chicken and beef and there are a plethora of meals to make with them. I decided my first would be ground turkey tacos and once I saw how easy and cheap it was to make I haven't looked back!

All you need is some ground turkey, corn or flour tortillas, sour cream, hot sauces, cheeses, and toppings of your choice such as lettuce, tomato, cilantro, onion and more. To season the meat I use a variety of spices such as paprika, chili powder, cumin, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, a generous amount of oregano (I really love oregano), and some crushed red pepper powder if you want a little more heat.

First, I start heating the meat on a skillet. While it is cooking I mix my spices in a bowl and set it aside. By now I can start flipping and mixing around the turkey to make sure it cooks evenly, I then throw a tortilla on a smaller skillet on low heat. Sometimes, if I have it in my apartment already, I pour a little bit of Modelo into the meat as it cooks for some extra flavor and juice. Once the turkey is about done I toss the spice mixture in and mix it well. As I am doing this I am monitoring my tortillas and flipping and replacing when necessary. After I have enough tortillas and the meat is cooked and seasoned I put some sour cream on a tortilla, place how much meat I want, sprinkle the cheeses I like, put hot sauce, and any other toppings. Pictured here is minimal toppings because as mentioned, this is my cheap college meal and I didn't buy any extra toppings such as lettuce (which I get when I make my homemade crunchwrap supremes aka the greatest meal I prepare so stay tuned).

And there you have it. A super quick meal that is done in about 15 min tops. Tastes great and depending on how much meat you use can be heated up for leftovers. For me, 1 LB of ground turkey from Aldi can make about 9 tacos. If you eat 3 for dinner which I usually do, that is 3 days worth of meals.

  1. Hello. These taco's look absolutely delicious. I think it is smart to do easy meals that you can do on a budget. Not only will this help in college, but as we start out in our careers. The way you described how you do things; they did make me feel like I was in the kitchen with you as you were making it. I love when food things are done like this, because you get to almost mentally watch how to do it before you do it. And nice job at mentioning where you can purchase the food, like the meat from Aldi. Nice job.

  2. I have also found myself with the challenge of cooking meals that don't take a long time to prepare. One of my go to's is also tacos as it is a great meal for leftovers. I am looking forwards to seeing what meals you cook and hopefully can help me think of new meals as I can't eat the same thing over and over again.

  3. These look so good! I prefer ground turkey over ground beef for my tacos. I make taco meat all the time because it's such a good and easy meal to make in college. With my busy schedule, it takes little time to prepare the taco and I will refrigerate the leftover to use the next few meals. I love seeing and reading about college meals, so I look forward to seeing more!
